Cloverfield it is

It's official. The film formerly known as Cloverfield is now called Cloverfield. Who saw that coming? That JJ Abrams is just a mystery wrapped up in an enigma. But of course the real big news is the new trailer, which like the teaser, offers only tantalising shaky-cam glimpses of the unfolding seafood-spawned terror. I don't want to be the one to have to say it, but in that the one brief shot of the creature itself, although hard to say for sure, it does look surprisingly like the so-called Cloverfield Monster fan art which I linked to before. Perhaps like the title, the monster was out in the open the whole time.

Perhaps not.

But three cheers for the post-production people working on the picture - it's good to see they've improved ol' Lady Liberty's decapitated bouncing bonce. Compare the pics below: note reference angle of lamppost to see how the motion physics and entire look of the head has been upgraded. I especially like the lighting detail of the flash on Liberty's face when the lamppost hits the ground a few frames later. Good work!

Wouldn't want to guess the increased man hours the CGI departments are putting in on this now there's just about two months til this thing drops. If you haven't seen the post-production diaries on Peter Jackson's King Kong DVD, I recommend it for a glimpse into the gargantuan task of pulling together all the shots in a modern CGI-intensive movie. In those Kong diaries you also see how action sequences rendered for the trailer are dramatically improved for the final cut simply due to the fact they have more time to get them right.

And to think in the old days Harryhausen did this sort of thing all with bendy models.
