Anyone still checking in with this blog for 1-18-08/Slusho news rather than any of the more dedicated fansites out there (Cloverfield Clues is always a good place to start) may not have heard that a new website has come online full of salient backstory details to flesh out the Cloverfield mythos. And this is definitely a legit site as far as we can tell - either that or it wins the award for best spoof site ever.
The clues that led to it came from a new picture on 1-18-08.com itself of a Japanese chef. A recipe in Japanese on the back (give the pic a shake to flip it) led some keen cyber sleuths on a trail to Tagruato, a subsidiary company of Slusho, actively engaged in deep sea excavation, and who just happen to have a new undersea station opening in the mid-atlantic not far from the east coast of America in September 2007. That'll give them about four months worth of drilling before the kraken awakes. (Just using the expression figuratively - less of a kraken than a big angry whale mutant. Or something. Either way it's some massive pissed off piece of sushi.)
Lots of great stuff in the Tagruato site to postulate over. One example: is the subsidiary company Bold Futura a reference to fellow film-makers Wes Anderson or Stanley Kubrick (who famously both have a reputation for employing the typeface Futura in their movies), or is it just a JJ Abrams in-joke as the title sequence of Lost (the looming 3D word) is set in Futura, albeit more Medium than Bold? It should be noted that the US trademark for Slusho is owned by Bold Futura, LLC.
Oh, and if you didn't know, another site relating to characters in the trailer called Jamie and Teddy has been active for a while. Currently it hosts two video messages from Jamie to Teddy (YouTube copies here and here) the latest of which references the mystical number six, introduces "cornbread" in a Jeopardy-stylee as the answer to an unknown question from Teddy, and tantalises Jamie (and us) as she has a gift from him that she mustn't open until 9 December. (BTW the site is passworded - to get to the vlogs use jllovesth.)
The real movie trailer can't be far off now.
